Roof Types Suited for Membrane Roofing
Built-Up Roofing System
Built-up roofing system or BUR is also known as tar and gravel roofs. They are made out of a combination of bitumen and reinforcing fabrics that are alternately applied. Built up roofing systems can be completely attached if they are applied to insulation or roof decks directly.
Advantage: Your roofs are fire-proof because gravel is very effective in repelling fire. The membrane material is also attractive and suitable for windows and decks. It also very affordable.
Single-Ply Roofing Systems
These are sheets that are manufactured by factories. The thickness of the finished product is known as mil thickness. Each sheet normally has a mil thickness of thirty to sixty mils. Single-ply roofs can be completely attached mechanically or held down using ballasts. Single-ply roofing membranes can either be Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) or Thermoplastic (TPO or PVC).
Advantage: Single-ply roof membranes are very easy and quick to install so you don’t have to worry about the price and the length of time people will be working on your roof. It is also very easy to maintain and repair.
Modified Bitumen
Modified Bitumen roof membranes are made up by reinforcing fabrics that carry the hot polymer modified bitumen and are composed of many layers. They are two-ply systems and are installed directly. They can either be attached by hot liquid bitumen applied in place or by torching it down on the surface.
Advantage: It is quick and easy to install. It has a light-colored surface that repels heat and can help you save on your electricity bill.
